If your feeling like ramen there's unfortunately only one place to go in Los Angeles, Daikokuya. Fortunately, it's the only place you'll ever want to go when it comes to ramen. A rather small hole-in-the wall eatery located in Los Angeles' Japan town there's always a bit of wait to get a seat. The trick to bypass this wait, go on a really hot day around 11AM, which is exactly what Tummy and Brother Charlie did today, it was miraculous! We were immediately seated without any waiting to be done.
Brother Charlie and I find ourselves at Daikokuya once every two or three weeks craving ramen in the hot pork broth or the shredded pork bowl which is another favorite. Today being so warm and all we both opt for the shredded pork bowl.
A pretty small restaurant |
The decor is Japanese of course, with many cute vintage Japanese posters & pics |
We begin by ordering a cold drink, perfect for the warm weather... Iced green tea! It's not sweetened at all which I think is great, it just tastes like ICED green tea.
The Shredded Pork Bowl comes as a meal accompanied with a small bowl of miso soup and shredded cabbage salad.
The shredded cabbage salad may not seem like much but the taste is delicious and hits the spot. The cabbage is thinly shredded and is then topped with a ginger salad dressing which I'm absolutely sure is made in the kitchen. Yes, simple and delish!
Out comes the main attraction for the day the Shredded Pork Bowl, I always love the way they serve it with a heaping amount of green onions which balances exactly right with the sweet sauce (that seems a lot like teriyaki sauce) in which the Shredded Pork is doused in, underneath is the white rice. Mix that all up together and taste the AWESOMENESS, if awesome indeed had a taste it would be something close to this... I would imagine.
Brother Charlie loves to add bunches and bunches of ginger to his shredded pork bowl, getting a good amount of ginger with each bite is where is shredded pork heart lays, sometimes he goes through the entire caddy of ginger sitting on the table! I should have rightfully named him the ginger-man instead.
Look at him stuffing his face! |
